Day in the Country – The Ironic Story Behind Our New Equestrian Print

Let’s get one thing straight: I design equestrian prints. I do not, under any circumstances, ride horses. (Unless you count that one time in Mongolia… and frankly, I’d rather not.)

Growing up, horses were the backdrop of my life—fox hunts, steeplechases, my sisters’ trophies lining the shelves. I was the designated cheerleader: enthusiastic, involved, and (secretly) plotting my escape. It started with a biting incident (thanks, childhood trauma), and though I adored the world of horses—the polished boots, the pageantry, the way a well-cut riding coat makes everyone look 10% more noble—I preferred admiring them from a safe distance.

This print is my love letter to the scenes I’ve always cherished—horses mid-gallop, dogs mid-zoom, the golden hues of rural life—without requiring me to actually get in the saddle. "

Preferably while wearing my favorite riding boots… to brunch.

My relationship with riding? Complicated. That Mongolia trip was a highlight reel of discomfort: wooden saddles, skeptical goats, and me white-knuckling the reins while smiling for photos. Yet, I still couldn’t resist the charm of equestrian life—the dogs underfoot, the crisp fall air, the vibrant energy of it all.

That’s where “Day in the Country” comes in. This print is my love letter to the scenes I’ve always cherished—horses mid-gallop, dogs mid-zoom, the golden hues of rural life—without requiring me to actually get in the saddle. Every detail, from the reins’ intricate stitching to the hounds’ playful energy, nods to the traditions I admire… and the friends who’ve kindly never pressured me to join their trail rides.

So here’s to celebrating the equestrian world—from the sidelines, with a cocktail in hand. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or just here for the aesthetic (raises hand), I hope this print brings you as much joy as it’s brought me to create.

P.S. If you see me near a horse, offer me a martini instead. It’s the only way this ends well.

   About me

I founded Heidi Carey in 2016 with a simple goal: To create beautiful, timeless accessories for my friends and their friends. I understood who they were at their core, and what types of things we all were looking for as we all moved along in our lives. It’s why my pieces are conceived for the woman who values both elegance and understatement; versatility and superb value.
