Heidi Carey’s REAL Travel Packing Guide for Women Who Actually Need Options

(...and aren’t jetting off to St. Barths with just a bikini and lip gloss)

Let’s Get One Thing Straight

If your idea of “packing light” is tossing a toothbrush and a sarong into a tote bag, this isn’t the guide for you. (God bless you, though—I envy your collagen.) For the rest of us—women who need options, who’ve lived long enough to know that “dewy skin” doesn’t happen by accident—this is your new manifesto.

The Myth of the Carry-On Cult. I’m not a Member

I’ve read every packing guide out there, and apparently, we’re all supposed to be minimalist nomads who wear the same linen tunic for 14 days straight. Hard pass. Here’s the truth:

  • “But lost luggage!” Please. With AirTags, your bag is basically texting you its location. And when was the last time you actually had to buy emergency underwear? (Okay, maybe that one time in ’09. Lesson learned.)
  • “Just do laundry!” Yes, hotel laundry is pricey. But so is therapy after wearing the same socks for a week. My husband grumbles about the bill, but even he admits I’m much nicer when I’m not rewearing a sweaty blouse.

The 5-4-3-2-1 Rule (And Why I Ignore It)

Five tops? Four bottoms? One swimsuit? Who are these people, and what kind of magical, stain-resistant lives do they lead? Instead, try my 80/20 Rule:
  • 80% of your outfits will come from 20% of what you pack. So focus on that 20%:
    • Tops: More than bottoms (obviously).
    • Bottoms: Dark neutrals that hide wine spills.
    • Shoes: One practical pair, one “I’m fancy” pair, and maybe a wildcard. (I said maybe.)
    • Accessories: Scarves and jewelry weigh nothing but make you look like you tried.

Packing Like a Pro (Without the Stress)

    • Color Code Your Life: Stick to a neutral palette, then add pops of color with accessories. (No, neon leopard print isn’t a “neutral.”)
    • Layer Like an Onion: Thin fabrics = more options. Two light sweaters beat one bulky one.
    • Shoehorn Reality: Yes, you could pack six pairs of shoes… but your spine will hate you.
  • Your New Secret Weapon: The Hanging Cosmetic Case

Forget cramming your toiletries into a tiny pouch. My tri-fold hanging bag is why I (almost) look forward to hotel bathrooms: Yes I still use a tiny pouch too!

    • Hangs anywhere (even cruise ship “closets” the size of a toaster).
    • Clear pockets so you can see your serum instead of guessing.
    • Sturdy enough to survive TSA and your overpacking tendencies.
    1. Skincare That Travels Better Than You Do
  • Hydrating serums (hotel air is the Sahara).
  • Eye cream (because jet lag is not a look).
  • A tinted moisturizer with SPF (multitasking queen).
  • 2. The New Basics
  • A laundry bag that doesn’t look like a trash sack.
  • A foldable tote (for souvenirs or emergency overpacking).
  • Backup readers & headphones (no squinting at menus, wireless and wired).
  • 3. The “Just Buy It There” Option
  • Don’t pack: “Just in case” outfits (if the King of Denmark invites you to tea, go shopping).
  • Do pack: All your electronics in one bag. No I did not launch one in this collection but it is designed. Next year for sure. Tell me if you have one you love.
  • My golden rule: If you don’t love it at home, it’s not coming. Dragging “maybe” shoes to Istanbul is how you end up blistered and bitter. Trust me."

Life’s too short for ugly outfits and dried-out skin. Pack what you need, ditch the guilt, and remember: Shopping abroad is always a great option.

Now, go forth and overpack strategically.

    💋 Heidi

    2. “How can I organize my makeup and skincare inside the case?”

    • Use small silicone jars for creams to prevent leaks.
    • Store brushes in a separate zip pouch or elastic loops.
    • Place frequently used items (like lipstick) in top compartments for easy access.

    3. “Are there different types of compartments or organizers?”

    Look for:

    • Adjustable dividers (for custom layouts).
    • Mesh pockets (to see products at a glance).
    • Removable inserts (for easy cleaning).

Upgrade pick: A case with magnetic closures keeps palettes secure and upright.

       About me

I founded Heidi Carey in 2016 with a simple goal: To create beautiful, timeless accessories for my friends and their friends. I understood who they were at their core, and what types of things we all were looking for as we all moved along in our lives. It’s why my pieces are conceived for the woman who values both elegance and understatement; versatility and superb value.
